Land Access & Leasing Guides
Finding and securing farmland is one of the biggest barriers to starting a farm in New York - these are the state’s main land-access resources.
What It Offers
- Farmland for a New Generation New York (FNG-NY), coordinated by American Farmland Trust, matches farmland seekers with landowners statewide through the free NY Farmland Finder platform.
- Regional Navigators - local partner staff across New York - offer one-on-one help with leases, business plans, and farm transition or succession planning.
- The NY Farmland Access Fund purchases and permanently protects farmland, then makes it available at below-market prices to historically underserved farmers, including veterans.
- AFT's Farm Transition Advisors directory can connect you to professionals for lease drafting and land-tenure planning.
How to Apply
- Create a free farmer profile at NY Farmland Finder describing what you're looking for.
- Connect with your Regional Navigator for personalized help finding land or reviewing a lease.
- Before signing anything, review AFT's leasing guidance on cash leases, crop-share leases, and other tenure arrangements.
- If you're seeking permanently affordable land, ask about eligibility for the NY Farmland Access Fund.
- FVC NY is working to build a dedicated resource that connects farmers looking to transition their land with veteran farmers. If you're a landowner or a veteran looking for land, contact us to get involved.
