New York Wine & Grape Foundation
The New York Wine & Grape Foundation is the statewide organization that promotes New York grapes and wine. Based in Penn Yan in the Finger Lakes, it works on marketing, research, communication, and advocacy on behalf of grape growers, wineries, and the people who buy their products.
Who it’s for
Vineyard owners and grape growers, wineries of every size, and people thinking about starting either one. New York is one of the country’s leading grape and wine states, with major growing regions in the Finger Lakes, Lake Erie, the Hudson Valley, the Niagara Escarpment, and Long Island.
What it offers
- New York Sustainable Winegrowing: a certification and trustmark program that recognizes vineyards and wineries using transparent, environmentally sound practices. Certification can help you stand out with buyers who care how their wine is grown.
- Research funding: support for work on pest management and sustainable growing methods that New York growers can put to use.
- New York Wine Classic: the state’s annual wine competition, including the Governor’s Cup and Winery of the Year awards.
- Industry events and trade shows: chances to meet buyers, distributors, and other producers.
- Membership: growers and wineries can join to take part in the foundation’s programs and have a voice in its work.
How veteran farmers can use it
Grapes are a long-term investment. A new vineyard takes several years to produce a full crop, so planning matters. The foundation’s research and sustainability resources can help you make good decisions from the start, and its events are a practical way to meet established growers who may buy your grapes or mentor you.
If you’ll be spraying, you’ll likely need a pesticide applicator certification. See our pesticide licensing guide. For vineyard financing, look at Farm Credit East and USDA FSA loans.
Getting started
