USDA Organic Inspector Training
A free, USDA-funded training pathway for farmers who want to work as accredited organic inspectors - no tuition required.
What It Offers
- Free training funded through USDA-AMS's Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), offered regionally through partner organizations.
- USDA's National Organic Program also runs a free “Organic Integrity Learning Center” with self-paced online courses for inspectors and certifiers.
- Regional programs typically run about 8 weeks online, at your own pace, and can include mock audits and farm visits.
- Graduates are often eligible for mentorship pairing with an experienced inspector before starting independent inspection work.
How to Apply
- Availability is regional and tied to funding cycles - check with your local TOPP-funded partner organization or USDA-AMS's National Organic Program for current openings.
- Application deadlines typically fall several weeks before the training start date - apply early.
- There's no guarantee of paid inspection work after training; it's on the trainee to contact Accredited Certifying Agents (ACAs) to solicit contract work.
- Contact FVC NY if you'd like help finding the current regional program.
