Free SUNY Agriculture Degrees (SUNY Reconnect)
New York’s 2026-27 Enacted Budget expanded the SUNY Reconnect program to cover associate degree programs at agriculture-focused SUNY campuses, including SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Canton, SUNY Delhi, SUNY ESF, SUNY Farmingdale State, SUNY Maritime, SUNY Morrisville, and Alfred State.
Eligibility: New York resident ages 25-55, no prior associate or bachelor’s degree, enrolled in an eligible associate program (approved list varies by campus), at least 6 credits per semester, degree completed within 10 semesters. The program covers tuition, fees, books, and supplies after other aid (like TAP) is applied.
Example associate degrees at these campuses:
- Agricultural Business Management (SUNY Cobleskill)
- Animal Science / Agricultural Science (SUNY Cobleskill)
- Beef and Livestock Studies (SUNY Cobleskill)
- Agricultural Engineering Technology (SUNY Cobleskill)
- Agriculture programs including dairy, agronomy, and agribusiness (SUNY Morrisville)
- Diesel Technology, A.A.S. (SUNY Cobleskill) - AED-accredited, includes farm machinery and equipment repair
- Diesel Equipment Technology, A.A.S. / Diesel Technology, A.O.S. (SUNY Morrisville) - covers farm machinery, hydraulic diesel equipment, and heavy equipment
- Heavy Equipment, Truck & Diesel Technician, A.O.S. (Alfred State) - NY’s top-ranked program, Association of Diesel Specialists approved
SUNY maintains a dedicated “Animal, Agriculture, and Farming” listing of free associate degree options. Program approval lists can change by semester, so confirm current eligibility directly with the campus admissions office before enrolling.

A note for veterans still holding GI Bill benefits: Because SUNY Reconnect does not use any GI Bill entitlement, veterans who have not yet earned a degree may want to consider completing an associate degree tuition-free through Reconnect first, then using GI Bill benefits toward a bachelor’s degree afterward - stretching GI Bill months further. This is a strategy worth discussing with a VA education counselor, since Reconnect’s age range and “no prior degree” rule won’t fit every veteran’s situation.
